culture: the beliefs, way of life, art, and customs that are shared and accepted by people in a particular society (longm.dic)

culture is defined pretty well here from the perspective of society. however, there is something more in the word culture which doesn’t belong to society, but to individual. as individuals, each of us has our own, unique way of living. we create them in the process of life, collect its parts from different societies. in a sense, we create our own individual cultures from different social cultures. ın this context, social cultures source individual cultures.

what if a person doesn’t like the social culture he’s been born in? what if he thinks it wasn’t evolutionary suitable? there is a chance for this person: to build his individual culture mostly from the other social cultures by consuming and internalizing them. there are many people chose that way. one of them is muzaffer şerif. he was a successful scientist in turkey, but he suffered a lot from the political atmosphere of the 90s, and decided to leave that lifestyle and continue his life in the united states, as muzafer sherif. in other words, he just left the turkish social culture and continued with american one by adapting his individual culture, even his name to it. he continued to live with that new way of living- in an american garden, far from turkish politics. with some help of analogy, it’s like… the hardware changed its software from turkish to american. while the hardware remains the same, the software can be changed, updated even deleted. okay but, what about assimilation?

assimilation: the process of adopting the language and culture of a dominant social group or nation

ıf the culture is such a changeable thing and doesn’t interlock with the individual, then what is this awful perception of being assimilated? the obvious netagive perception of it is aside, ı have a first-hand experience abou that: ı come from a greece originated family. ıt’s been so assimilated that most of the members internalized it and believed they are turkish. when i talked about that topic with my 102 years old grand grandmother, who is one of the last people speaking greece in the family, she told us in reality, we all were greece. all young members of my family who currently were there suddenly stood up and complained about how crazy she got.

the reason for this reaction should be sought in evolutional social relations. ıf there is a group dominating the other one, then it means the dominating group has better qualities than the dominated one and in a sense, evolutionary superior. the reason for being in the superior position may have a lot of parameters: genetic, culture and pretty likely- the evolutional randomity. ındependently from the real reason, we perceive the dominating group and its members superior: they have more rights, more resources and etc. therefore, it creates an awful perception to somehow imply that you were assimilated (dominated). ın other words, you’re not originally from the dominating culture, but the dominated one. whether or not the group superiority assumption is correct in the reality, the fact is, the perception is unconsciously internalized as the reality.

ın the end, culture is a changeable and non-interlocked software for the individuals; however, there are tough evolutionary facts that this interlockness may not be that acceptable in some cases because of the irrationality of human nature. these kinds of irrationalities may also hurt the individual, not only externally, but internally. legends say that sherif cried every night, while drinking raki and listening to turkish songs, while realising the american dream.
