  hukuki olarak ise mevcut hakların korunması, mevcut durumun kötüleştirilememesini ifade eder. özellikle de uluslararası hukuk açısından antlaşmanın yürürlüğe girdiği tarihteki durumu geriye götüren ya da daha da kötüleştiren yeni düzenleme ve yeni yükümlülükler getirelemeyeceğini anlatır. örneğin, türkiye ile at arasında imzalanan 1970 tarihli katma protokol’ün 41/1. maddesi bir standstill hükmüdür.
