  the police used tear gas and water cannon on 22 february to disperse a large group of activists, who had gathered near ıstiklal avenue in the commercial capital ıstanbul (ıstanbul province) to protest against internet censorship. the clashes occurred at around 19.20 (local time) in the area between the nearby demiroren shopping centre and galatarasay square after the police erected barricades to prevent the protesters from marching towards taksim square; scuffles were also reported in nearby streets, including tarlabasi boulevard.
