emeritus professor of the faculty of history, university of bucharest, director of the center for turkish studies, founding director of the „dimitrie cantemir” romanian cultural ınstitute ıstanbul (2005-2010) and honorary member of the turkish academy of history, professor mihai maxim, left behind a scientific work dedicated to the history of the romanian-ottoman relations and the ottoman empire.
„there are scholars whose life is juxtaposed with the written work they leave for posterity. others shine more through the influence they have on their collegues of various generations, stimulate vocations and create shools. the are fewer situations when one and the same person is equally measures on both the same plans. professor mihai maxim is one of these happy cases” – wrote prof.dr. bogdan murgesc in 2004, when a volume dedicated to his 60th anniversary was published in romania (studii şi cercetari de turcologie contemporana. omagiu profesorului mihai maxim, coord.
calin felezeu, cluj-napoca, 2004) historian mihai maxim was born november 9, 1943 in vorniceni, botosani county, romania and attended the high-school classes in ıasi. ın 1961 he became a student of the faculty of history, alexandru ıoan cuza university in ıasi and from 1963 he received a scholarship to specialize in oriental studies in the soviet union. thus, he continued his initial studies at the faculty of the oriental studies, baku university (azerbaidjan) and then to lomonosov university in moscow, where he studied ottoman paleography with ana s. tveritinova. since 1968 he has become part-time teaching assistant at the faculty of history, bucharest university, where he embraced the teaching career until retirement in 2011 : full time teaching assistant (1976), asistant professor (1978), assitant to professor (1990) and a professor since 1993. between 1969-1972 he pursued research in turkey under the guidance of halil ınalcik, who became his mentor for life. he was visiting professor at columbia university (1990-1991), univeristy of ıstanbul (1995-2001), university of venice (2002-2003), fatih university, ıstanbul.
he has been supervisor for numerous phd students from romania, japonia, ıtaly, turkey, ıran. his scientific career was dedicated to the study of the romanian-ottoman relations. he has published over 100 titles, including volumes culegere de texte otomane, 1974, limba turco-osmana. curs practic (1984, 1993, 2004), ?arile române ?i înalta poarta.cadrul juridic al relatiilor romano-otomane in evul mediu (1993), l’empire ottoman au nord du danube et l’autonomie des principautés roumaines au xvıe siècle.etudes et documents (ıstanbul 1999), noi documente turcesti privind tarile romane si ınalta poarta (1526-1602) (braila, 2009). the most recent publication is documente noi din arhivele turce?ti, vol. ı, braila, 2016. despite the various academic and diplomatic titles received throughout his life, mihai maxim has always asked everyone to call him professor, considering that positions come and go, but the teaching vocation is for life.
