• 1993 yapımı, mike leigh'in herhalde en huzursuz edici filmi. aynı zamanda tüm zamanların en sağlam kara mizah örneklerinden. dibe vurmaya ve dibe vuranlara bir selam. londra'yı geçici olarak mesken tutmuş bir nevi anglo-sakson flaneur'ü manchester'lı johnny'nin sokak maceraları.

  özellikle modernizme ait bol bol put kırar johnny bu filmde. bir cafede tanıştığı garson kızın kaldığı eve gittiğinde şöminenin üstünde duran disk atan antik yunanlı adam heykelini göstererek "bak, pizzacı!" ^* der. "ev sahipleri gay galiba?" diye de ekler. avrupamerkezci batı modernizmin antik yunan saplantısıyla kafa geçmektedir. johnny uygarlıkla savaşı nda bununla da yetinmez, yine rastgele uğradığı geçkin bir hatunun evinden bir çanta dolusu kitap alıp tüymeden önce masanın üstünde bulduğu kitaba bakıp "jane austen by emma" der. modern ingiliz edebiyatı da nasibini alır bu saldırıdan. johnny içi bomboş görünen yeni bir binanın güvenlik görevlisi/gece bekçisi ile giriştiği varoluş tartışması içinde bir ara “ne yapıyorsun bu postmodern gaz odasında?” diye sorduğu adamın "i watch over space" ^* demesi üzerine “ama bu saçma çünkü birisi içeri girip bütün boşluğu çalabilir ve bunu sen asla fark edemezsin” diyerek olaya noktayı koyar.

  yapımından bu yana 12 yıl geçmiş olsa da eskimemiş, bu gidişle kolay kolay da eskimeyecek bir dönem klasiği. bir nevi postmodernist aylaklık ve başkaldırı manifestosu. mike leigh’e en iyi yönetmen, david thewlis'e de en iyi erkek oyuncu dalında altın palmiye getirmiştir.
• gorselligin tamamiyle ikinci planda oldugu bir diyalog filmi.senaryosu inceliklerle,emekle,zekayla yazilmis.ama bu bir oyku veya tiyatro oyunu olarak karisimiza ciksaymis sanki daha iyi olurmus.
  simdi susalimda johnny konussun,kafamizi zksin.
• louise johnny'yi sever. johnny dalga geçmeyi ve karşısındakini zorlamayı sever. mike leigh küçük insanları sever. biz mike leigh'i severiz. son sahnesi les quatre cents coups'un son sahnesinin bıraktığı etkiyi yaratır. limon ekşisi. bu sekansı sevmemek imkansızdır, tıpkı limonu sevmemenin imkansızlığı gibi.
