    45 dakikalık kesintisiz bir şarkıdan oluşur. ian anderson'un daha ilk dizesiyle - yine usta bir alaycılık kullanarak - çevresini ve toplumu aşağıladığı bir parçadır : "eğer bu parçadan hiç bir şey anlamazsanız fazla kafanıza takmayın". çoğunlukla üst sınıflara yönelen eleştiriler, düşünme gücünü kullanmayan / düşünmek istemeyen bireyleri hedef alır. toplumun empoze etmeye çalıştığı normlar ve değerler karşısında bireyin dayanıklı olması gerektiğini çok karmaşık sözlerle anlatmaya çalışır. anderson'un hiçbir zaman arı bir kültür olarak göremediği amerikan kültürüne ince göndermelerle doludur albüm. şarkının sözlerini deşifre etmeye çalışmak hiç de kolay olmadığı gibi sembolik anlatımlar ortalama bir dinleyiciyi/okuyucuyu çok yanlış yorumlara götürebilir dizelerde ortak bir tema bulunsa da, 45 dakika boyunca bölümler arasındaki bağlantı asıl olarak müzikle sağlanmaktadır. jazz, folk, rock ve hatta klasik müzik öğelerinin bir çeşit sentezidir albümün melodik yapısı.

    has formed the plan to change the man he seems.

    coming from across the sea, he challenges the son who puts him to the run.

    what do you do when
    the old man's gone -- do you want to be him? and
    your real self sings the song.
    do you want to free him?

    and the whirlpool turns you `way off-beam.
