• london calling albümünün temasına pek uymayan şarkı. hatta albüme eklemek istemezlerken son anda fikir değiştirmişler. baştan aşağı politik diyebileceğimiz bir albüme sıkıştırılmış, insanı kalkıp oynatabilecek türde bir ayrılık şarkısı.
  
  şarkımız, 26 haziran doğumlu, yengeç burcu erkeği mick jones^* 'un, o zamanlardaki sevgilisi, the slits gitaristi viv albertine'ı ziyarete gittiği bir tren yolculuğunu anlatıyor. ziyareti iyi sonuçlanmayınca, şarkının da adı "stand by me"den train in vain'e dönmüş. iddialara göre train in vain, the slits'in typical girls şarkısında geçen "typical girls stand by their man" sözüne de ufaktan dokunduruyormuş.
