• st andrews üniversitesinde sosyal bilimler okumasına rağmen klinik psikologluğu yerine oyuncu olmayı seçen; kendisini geliştirmek için bir yıl iskoç müzik ve drama akademisine devam etmiş 17 nisan 1944 tayside, scotland doğumlu aktör. bir yıllık çalışmasının ardından londra ve iskoçya’nın birçok tiyatrosunda rol alıp sonunda royal shakespeare company’e katılmış.
  1970’lerin sonunda profesyoneller isimli tv dizisinde yardımcı karakter rolüyle televizyona, 1980’de ilk kez televizyona geçiş yapan oyuncu 1983 yılında star wars episode vi - return of the jedi filminde imparator palpatine^*’i oynayarak üne kavuşmuştur.
  1990 yılından bu yana islington’s almeida tiyatrosunun co-artistic direktörü olan (jonathan kent ile birlikte) mcdiarmid pek bilinmeyen bu tiyatronun londra’nın en çok saygı duyulan sahnelerinden biri olmasında da çok büyük rol oynamıştır.
