'ı did not know lee personally, and ı am struggling w/his death.

ı live about 10 blocks from where he took his life. ı walked over to his building last night and prayed for lee thompson young, for his family & friends, and for anyone who has to deal with suicide & the consequences.

ı stood there and thought about our neighborhood, studio city in los angeles, where ı lived around lee, & how many people would love to live here. how the weather is always good. how there is so much food in abundance, restaurants w/cuisines from all over the world, markets w/fresh fruits/vegetables and seafood, olives, noodles, spices flown in from all over the world. music, theatre and movies everywhere. griffith park and fryman canyon if you want to walk in the woods. stores that sell anything a person could need. hospitals with fine doctors and nurses to keep you alive. firemen to protect homes and businesses. buses, cars, subways to take you anywhere you need to go. clubs with music from all over the world. thousands of people to talk to, to dance with, to know and share life and food, and even a simple cup of coffee. lee thompson young lived in a fantastic area of the world. no tanks, no bombs, no dictators, no military regime blowing up the town square. no bodies in the middle of the street, no starving children wandering around selling chiclets or turning tricks with tourists.

yes...l.a. has bad traffic and gangs and problems. but lee lived in studio city. he lived a 10 minute drive to his well-paid job. he had been an actor for years, and seemed to love it. most of his many projects were hugely successful. do you know that only 15% of the screen actors guild make even $10,000 per year as actors? most of them never get acting jobs. ı knew a guy who got a few speaking lines and a sag card 2 weeks after he came to la. he thought he had it made. he never got another acting job for the next 20 years, and worked as a waiter hoping for his "big break" which never came. lee thompson young was one of the most fortunate actors in the usa, because not only did he have work, he got paid, and...his shows got picked up year after year. do you know how many actors dream of that, and it never happens?

lee was supremely handsome -- beautiful really -- w/uniquely riveting, shimmering, rust-colored eyes -- in good shape, energetic, engaging, articulate. he had exquisite clothes, a fantastic car. for god's sake, he even had dazzling teeth! do you know how many people in africa or ındia would love to have his teeth? not to speak of his healthy kidneys, lungs and heart. he was an amazing young man in the prime of his life.

    so what happened?

ı can understand his pain and loneliness in a huge place like los angeles. he had "everything" people think they want and need to be content. handsome, respected in a profession he seemed to enjoy, well-compensated, large group of supportive co-workers. we assume he had a loving family and friends. lee was incredibly appealing and charistmatic, which is why he had fans around the world -- myself included. but people here can be very shallow, and use each other for whatever they can get from one another. that happens everywhere though. why was lee in so much pain that he went out and bought a gun---and destroyed his beautiful body, and shot himself to death?

ı think about people ı know who have cancer who are in chemo right now, who are racked w/pain, vomiting, skinny and bald, and who would love to have his healthy body.

ı think about myself who has been out of work for a few years who has no clue what ı'm going to do to earn money to eat and pay rent.

ı guess ı really don't understand depression. lee could have walked down the street and picked an avocado off a tree & gone to the park right across the street from his building on tujunga avenue. he could have scampered around in the sunshine w/some playful dogs & laughing children, and walked up the street and had amazing thai food for lunch. he could have walked into any club in la, and danced with people who would love to meet him and buy him a beer. there are 1700 aa meetings per week in los angeles. he could have walked into any one of those meetings, and asked people for help, told them how much pain he was in, and that he was so depressed he wanted to kill himself. hundreds of people who never met him in their lives would have intervened, sat in his house with him for days, contacted his relatives...done something to stop this.

ıt is so sad he did not reach out and ask for for help. because ı live right down the street from him. ı would have done anything in my power to stop him, to make him think about it for even 24 hours. to have him think about the pain he was going to inflict on his mother and those who loved him. maybe we could have stopped him. ıt's just too sad.'
