• şarkının kısaca özeti olarak, şarkıda stan adında eminem'in die hard hayranı olan bir çocuğun eminem'e yazdığı mektuplar yer almaktadır. stan daha önceki bir konserde eminem ile ayaküstü konuşmuş ve mektup yazması durumunda yanıt alacağı konusunda söz almıştır.
  
  ilk kıtada stan'in üçüncü mektubunu eminem'e yazarken buluruz. stan'in kız arkadaşı hamiledir ve eğer kızı olursa adını bonnie koyacağını söyler (eminem'in çok sevdiği amcası ronnie intihar etmiştir). burası normal bir kıtadır.

  üçüncü kıtada stan son derece öfkelidir (şarkıyı söylerken sesinden de bellidir), diğer hiçbir mektuplarına yanıt vermeyen eminem'e bu sefer arabada kaset doldurmaktadır. kendisi dünya kadar votka içmiş ve otobanda 90 mil hızla gitmektedir. eminem'e türlü laneti okuduktan sonra arkadan bir çığlık gelir, stan hamile kız arkadaşının elini kolunu bağlayıp arabanın bagajına kilitlemiştir. kıtanın sonuna doğru stan arabayı köprüden aşağıya sürer ve denize düşerler, ancak kasedin kime olduğunu söylememiştir.
  
  dördüncü ve son kıtada eminem stan'in önceki tüm mektuplarına cevap vermektedir. çok meşgul olduğunu belirtir, kız arkadaşının durumunu sorar, kardeşi için imzalı bir resim gönderir. bütün bu süre zarfında stan'e sakin olmasını, kız arkadaşıyla daha çok ilgilenmesini, "birlikte olmalıyız" derken neyi kastettiğini anlamadığını söyler. ancak mektubun sonuna doğru birkaç hafta önce sarhoş bir sürücünün bagajdaki eli kolu bağlı hamile kız arkadaşı ile birlikte arabasını köprüden aşağı uçurduğunu ve arabada kime olduğu belli olmayan bir kaset bulunduğunu hatırlar. şarkı eminem'in o habere çıkan kişi ile mektupları yazanın aynı kişi olduğunu farketmesiyle biter, şarkının son sözü "şimdi düşününce, o adamın adı... o sendin, stan!" şeklindedir.

• rap müzik tarihinin en büyük başyapıtlarından olan şarkı. lise yıllarındayken her gün dinlediğim için midir bilmiyorum ama müthiş bir nostalji yaşatır bana. dido'nun müthiş vokaliyle birlikte, özellikle film senaryosunu andıran sözlerine (ve elbette o müthiş video klibine) de dikkat edince resmen gözlerimi yaşartan bir şarkıdır. rap müzikle ilgilenmeyen bir kişi olarak benim için bile efsane olmuştur. böylesine hem hüzünlü hem de öfke dolu bir şarkıyla amerikan rüyası dahil kafamızdaki tüm mitlere müthiş bir eleştiri getiren vurucu bir eser yarattığı için eminem'e teşekkürler.
