  nick: did you ever hear of the water rat experiment?
  terry: no.
  nick: they did this experiment.
  terry: the famous "they".
  nick: it happened. i read about it in newsweek.
  nick: they take rat number one. they hold in in their hand. they let it struggle. but they hold it tight enough so that it knows no matter how hard it tries, it can never escape. and once the rat realizes this and has given up, they throw him in this big tank of water. the rat swims for like three minutes before he drowns.
  terry: that's a sadistic--
  nick: shut up.
  nick: then take this other rat. rat number two. they hold him in their hand. but just loose enough so that when he struggles. he's able to escape the hand under his own power, and he jumps into the water. and that motherfucker swam 45 minutes before he drowned.
  terry: what's your point?
  nick: my point is, if i go back to the hospital, then they got me. i become rat number one.
  terry: what about the rat that refuses to participate?
  nick: what do you mean?
  terry: the one refuses to struggle but just sits there. buddha rat.
  nick: i don"t know. there wasn't any buddha rat in the study.
