  baraj, 1924-1926 yılları arasında, o sırada başında yüksek mühendis william mulholland'ın olduğu, su işleri bürosu tarafından yapılmıştır.
  
  12 mart 1928 günü gece yarısı, (mulholland'ın teftişinden ve güvenlik onayı vermesinden 12 saat sonra) barajın bir duvarı yıkılmış ve serbest kalan 47 milyon m3 su, 43 m.lik bir yükseklikle, san francisquito kanyonuna doğru 29 km/h hızla akmaya başlamıştır. 87 km ilerdeki pacific okyanusuna ulaşana kadar, su kütlesi, ortalama 3 km genişlik ve saatte 8 km hız ile yol almıştır. bu esnada önüne çıkan herşeyi ve yaklaşık 600 insanı pacifik okyanusuna taşımıştır.
  
  st.francis barajı felaketi, amerika'da 20 yy'ın en büyük insan hatası olarak kabul edilmiştir.
  
  bu tecrübeye sahip amerikalılar, 2017'de aşırı yağışlar sebebi ile savaklarının birinde aşınma tespit edilen oroville barajı'nın yıkılma tehlikesine karşı, baraj çevresindeki 180.000 kişi için tahliye emri vermiştir. (bkz: oroville barajı)
