  "happy b-day to joe satch!
  i was 12 years old when ı walked up to the doorstep of joe satriani’s house in westbury long ısland, perhaps a 10 minute walk from where i lived.
  i had a guitar and a pack of strings and knew nothing about it, not even how to put the strings on. for 3-4 years after that, joe was my private teacher once a week, and from then on he has been my musical life mentor. ı meditated on my lessons. they were the most important thing in my world. joe was always completely selfless when it came to sharing his ideas. ın my mind through the years, joe always represented what was the finest and most exciting things about the guitar, and ı know ı’m not alone in feeling this way. he taught me the importance of finding my own musical voice on the instrument and whenever joe put his hands on the guitar, what comes out always sounds like beautiful music, even when he was 15! sitting and just improvising with joe are some of my fondest musical memories. but also, learning not to take yourself so seriously and keeping a sense of humor was also learned. ı am convinced that if not for him, there would be no steve vai the guitar player, or if there was, he would be very different.
  
  but what ı treasure the most is our friendship. ı have learned so much more than just how to play the guitar from joe, and through the years we have had the great good fortune to record and tour together and engage in tremendously rewarding life experiences, and we continue to do so!
