resmi kuruluş tarihi 3 nisan 1860 olan posta teşkilatı. orta amerika'daki bu atlı postacılar ile 1200km kadar mesafeye 10 günde mektup gidebiliyordu. günde 120km yol kateden binicilerin 57 kg'dan fazla olmasına izin verilmiyordu ve 120km mesafeyi birkaç defa at değiştirerek alıyorlardı.

jim, pony express hakkında şöyle der:
"i think around the fifth or sixth grade i wrote a poem called " the pony express". that was the first i can remember. it was one of those ballad-type poems. i never could get it together, though. i always wanted to write, but i figured it'd be no good unless somehow the hand just took the pen and started moving without me really having anything to do with it. like autonomic writing. but it just never happened."
