  billie holiday yaşamının ve kariyerinin ilerleyen yıllarında çocukluğundan itibaren yaşamın zor koşullarıyla mücadele etmek durumunda kalmasının da etkisiyle çeşitli ruhsal sorunlar yaşamış, bu sorunları alkol, uyuşturucu ve psikolojik, fiziksel ve ekonomik şiddete maruz kaldığı ilişkilerle aşmaya çalışmışsa da bunlar kendisini daha da zor durumlara sokmuş, yeniden zor günler yaşamaya başlamıştır (nicholson, 1995). çocukluğunda ve yetişkinliğinde yaşadığı zor günleri müziğiyle ifade edebilmiştir. kadın olmanın zor olduğu bir dönem ve toplumda bir de siyahi bir kadın olmanın zorluklarını sonuna kadar yaşayan, henüz küçük bir çocukken yaşadığı bölgenin tehlikeleriyle, erkeklerin cinsel şiddetiyle, babasının annesini ve kendisini terk edişiyle mücadele etmek zorunda kalmış bir müzisyen kadın olarak tüm bu zorluklarla baş etme uğraşında müzik etkin bir rol oynamıştır. yaşadığı tüm acılar sesinde ve sözlerinde vuku bulmuş, blues müzik, konuşma ile anlatıldığında bu kadar etkili olamayacak bir iletişim kurma pratiği haline gelmiştir.
  
  1941 yılında ilk kez seslendirdiği god bless the child adlı şarkı, billie holiday’in atlatamadığı çocukluk travmalarına atıfta bulunmakta, belki hiç anlatamadıklarını müziğin gücüyle anlatmaktadır. aynı zamanda, yoksulluğun, şiddetin özellikle cinsel şiddetin yaygın olduğu siyahi topluluklar gibi topluluklarda yaşayan tüm çocukların acılarına ortak olan bir dilek niteliğindedir.
